Strain Hunting Adventure Across Mexico: Cannavue's Journey into the Heart of Landrace Cannabis

Updated: Oct 3

At Cannavue, we’ve always prided ourselves on offering premium, authentic cannabis strains that go beyond the mainstream market. But what truly sets us apart is our ongoing dedication to preserving and sharing the cultural and agricultural heritage of landrace cannabis strains. With our longtime cultivation partner and head of Cannavue Mexico, Juan Carlos, a seasoned commercial cultivator from the state of Morelos, we recently embarked on an unforgettable strain-hunting journey across the diverse landscapes of Mexico.

This adventure not only deepened our connection with Mexico's rich cannabis legacy but also strengthened our bond with the local farming communities who have been cultivating these heirloom strains for generations.

The Long-Standing Bond Between Cannavue and Mexico’s Farmers

Our relationship with regional cannabis farmers in Mexico is built on mutual respect, trust, and a shared passion for cannabis. For decades, small, secluded farms across the country have preserved landrace strains, each with unique traits that reflect the microclimates and soils where they’ve been nurtured. With Juan Carlos leading the way, Cannavue has formed enduring partnerships with these farmers, helping them continue their time-honored traditions while sharing their unique strains with the world.

Juan Carlos, having cultivated in Morelos for years, was our gateway to these close-knit communities. His knowledge of Mexico’s heirloom strains is unmatched, and with his guidance, we embarked on a journey to uncover some of the rarest cannabis varieties that the country has to offer.

A Journey Through the Regions of Mexico: Landrace Strains and Local Culture

Our first stop was the highlands of Oaxaca, a region renowned for its landrace sativa strains. Here, we were introduced to Oaxacan Highlands Purple, a vibrant and energizing strain known for its striking purple hues and airy, uplifting effects. We spent time with local farmers, engaging in traditional Oaxacan rituals, including Temazcal, a spiritual steam bath that cleanses both body and mind, setting the tone for the strain’s deeply uplifting effects.

From Oaxaca, we headed north to the mountainous region of Guerrero, home to the Guerrero Gold, a legendary strain celebrated for its potent cerebral effects and fruity, floral aroma. The journey to reach the secluded farms in Guerrero was anything but easy. Navigating steep, rugged terrain and dense forests, we were often on foot for hours, passing through rivers and narrow trails. But the reward was worth every step—meeting growers who have been cultivating these strains for generations and learning their secrets was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In Morelos, Juan Carlos’s home region, we encountered the famed Morales Highland, a landrace strain that flourishes in the rich volcanic soil surrounding the Popocatépetl volcano. This strain, with its earthy and citrus aroma, is a local treasure, revered for its powerful and uplifting sativa effects. The farmers here welcomed us with open arms, treating us to Chinelos—a lively traditional dance that celebrates the region’s culture and history. The festive atmosphere mirrored the strain’s energetic and joyful high.

The Sierra Madre mountains of Chiapas offered us a different challenge. Known for their rugged, steep slopes, these mountains are home to the Chiapas Verde strain, a landrace sativa with strong citrus and pine notes. As we hiked through the mist-covered mountains, we couldn’t help but feel the deep connection the farmers have with their land. The remote villages here are self-sustained, and cannabis has been a crucial part of their agricultural traditions for decades. Harvesting and curing techniques passed down through generations ensure that each plant carries the wisdom of the past.

Strain Hunting Challenges: Navigating Mexico’s Hidden Heirloom Farms

While the beauty of Mexico’s landscapes and cannabis strains left us in awe, accessing these secluded farms wasn’t always easy. Many of these farms are tucked away in remote, hard-to-reach areas, intentionally hidden to protect them from outside threats. Navigating rugged terrain, unpaved roads, and dense jungles became part of our daily routine. In some cases, we had to leave our vehicles behind and trek for hours through thick forests and steep mountain trails. The natural beauty of Mexico’s countryside was breathtaking, but it was also a reminder of the challenges faced by the farmers who cultivate these precious strains in isolation.

Guerrero was particularly challenging, with its rough terrain and, at times, volatile security situation. Juan Carlos’s deep ties to the community were essential here. His presence and long-standing relationship with the farmers allowed us to access farms that are typically closed to outsiders, ensuring that we could document and secure seeds for future cultivation without compromising the safety or privacy of the farmers.

In the Yucatán Peninsula, we explored ancient Mayan farmland, where hidden cannabis plots are interspersed with corn and other staple crops. Here, we discovered a rare local strain with a unique terpene profile that carried earthy, woody undertones and a surprisingly fruity aftertaste. The region's dense jungle canopy provided the ideal cover for the farmers’ crops, but it also made accessing the farms a test of endurance and perseverance.

The Future of Landrace Cannabis with Cannavue

Our strain-hunting journey across Mexico wasn’t just about discovering new strains; it was about honoring the deep-rooted traditions that have sustained these heirloom varieties for generations. Through our partnerships with local farmers and our cultivation expertise, we’re bringing these landrace strains to the wider market, ensuring their legacy is preserved.

Cannavue’s collaboration with Juan Carlos and the regional farming communities is about more than just cannabis—it's about building lasting relationships, preserving agricultural heritage, and showcasing the extraordinary cannabis that Mexico has to offer. We look forward to continuing our work with the farmers and sharing more rare and exciting strains with our Cannavue family.
